Information Environments
The settings and systems in which information is created, managed, exchanged, accessed and retained across an asset or project lifecycle.
- Archive Area
This is one of four areas/labels within a Common Data Environment (CDE). The Archive area holds a record of signed off work/models, change orders, progress records, and provides an audit trail in the event of a dispute
- Common Data Environment
A managed source of information used to collect, manage and distribute relevant, approved project information for multidisciplinary teams. A Common Data Environment (CDE) is often supported by a Document Management System that facilitates information sharing among Project Participants. Information within a CDE carries an agreed status or resides in an area such as Work in Progress Area, Shared Area, Published Area or Archive Area.
- Common Information Environment
The digital environment allowing access to Structured Project Data by multiple concurrent users. There are three types of Common Information Environments: Shared Document Environment, Federated Modelling Environment and Integrated Data Environment
- Federated Modelling Environment
A single source of information for a project or an asset, used to collect, store and allow controlled access to model-based information by project/asset stakeholders. A Federated Modelling Environment differs from a Shared Document Environment by allowing the isolation of Structured Project Information by Model Use...Also refer to Integrated Data Environment (IDE) and Model Server
- Information
The facts provided or learned about events, things, processes or concepts that has a particular meaning within a certain context [adapted from the Oxford Dictionary and ISO/IEC 2382-1:1993]
- Information Container State
The state of Information Container exchanged through the Common Data Environment. There are four information container states: Work in Progress, Shared, Published, and Archive. The permissions and processes governing each state, and the transition from one state to another, are defined by the Appointing Party and are detailed in the BIM Execution Plan, Information Delivery Plans, and related Appointment documents
- Integrated Data Environment
A central or distributed repository of Integrated Data feeding from multiple data sources and information systems across disciplines and domains. An Integrated Data Environment allows manipulation of data by multiple stakeholders according to access rights and agreed Data View Definitions
- Published Area
This is one of four areas/labels within a Common Data Environment (CDE). The Published area holds information that has been approved or 'signed off' by the client/employer
- Shared Area
This is one of four areas/labels within a Common Data Environment (CDE). The Shared area holds information that has been checked (typically by the Information Manager), reviewed and approved for sharing with other Project Participants
- Shared Document Environment
A central source of information for a project or an asset. A Shared Document Environment is not necessarily a single software solution but combines the functionalities of several software tools including: Document Management System, Document Viewer, Model Viewer, and Project Management software. A Shared Document Environment may connect to several software tools and data sources through plugins...Also refer to Federated Modelling Environment
- Work in Progress Area
This is one of four areas/labels within a Common Data Environment (CDE). The Work In Progress (WIP) area holds unapproved information developed by each organization within the project team
